How are Lab-Grown Diamonds Manufactured?
Diamonds are composed of carbon and require high heat and pressure to form into crystals. While natural diamonds are created deep beneath the Earth's surface, man-made diamonds are produced using two main methods in the lab:
1. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
In the CVD process, a small "seed" diamond is placed inside a sealed chamber and heated to a high temperature. The seed, initially a diamond created through the High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) method, is exposed to carbon-rich gases, such as methane, which are ionized into plasma. This ionization breaks the gas molecules into atoms, allowing the diamond to slowly crystallize over weeks or months. The result is a real diamond formed in a lab instead of millions of years of natural pressure.
2.High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT)
HPHT diamonds are produced using one of three methods: cubic press, belt press, or split-sphere (BARS) press. These techniques replicate the extreme conditions found deep in the Earth’s crust. In this process, a diamond seed is placed in carbon and exposed to temperatures ranging from 2,550°F to 2,900°F and pressures of about 5.5 million pounds per square inch. This causes the carbon to melt and crystallize around the seed, forming a pure carbon diamond over time.-
